After another stupid fight with my husband, Mike, I decided I’d had enough. He'd never laid hands on me before, but this time, he shoved me against the wall... He dismissed it as a 'warning tap,' but I immediately left and drove an hour to my family, not wanting to spend another night alone with him. When I woke up at my parents' house the next morning, everything felt off. I knew was safe, but I just couldn't believe what had happened with Mike... My heart sank as I replayed the argument with him repeatedly in my head, but I was pulled back to reality by a gentle knock on my door. 'Sweetie, how are you feeling?' my mom asked as she entered the room. I knew she had my back, but I would have to figure this out on my own.

Over breakfast, my brother Jake must have noticed how lost I looked, because halfway his coffee he asked, 'Want me to go with you to get your stuff?' I knew I needed to go back to the house to grab my things, but I dreaded going there all by myself. 'Yeah, that would help. Thank you,' I replied, trying to stop my voice from shaking. I was so glad he would go with me!

After we finished breakfast, Jake and I hit the road. It was about an hour drive, and neither of us talked much for the first half. We just hummed along to some songs on the radio and talked about the weather and other basic things, but then, about halfway the trip, Jake suddenly asked me a serious question. 'Has he ever hurt you before?' I shook my head. 'Never... until last night.'

Jake's knuckles tightened around the wheel, and I noticed his jaw tightening too. He was furious. 'That asshole,' he muttered under his breath, and suddenly I worried about what would happen when he stood face to face with Mike. 'I'm just going in to grab some stuff, that's it, okay? Now is not the time for any big confrontations. Promise me you'll stay calm,' I asked. 'What, so he can hit you, but I can't hit him back?' Jake countered, but I insisted, and he finally nodded, rolling his eyes.
