Lucy couldn't hide her surprise when her mom, Janet, announced she was getting remarried. The joy in the room was palpable as Janet extended her hand to show off the sparkling ring that symbolized her new beginning. But Lucy's excitement faded to confusion as she stared at the ring, her heart racing with a strange familiarity.
"That ring isn't yours!" Lucy exclaimed, her voice trembling with disbelief...
“Whatever could you possibly mean by that” Janet exclaimed, quickly pulling back her hand. Before she could completely withdraw it, Lucy took hold of her hand so that she could examine the ring further. In stunned silence, Lucy traced her thumb over the ring on her mother’s finger. “I mean it, mom,” Lucy says, a sad look on her face. “I’ve seen this ring before. It isn’t yours.”
“Yes, it is,” Janet said in a defensive tone. She tried to pull back her hand, but Lucy wouldn’t let her. “No, mom, it isn’t,” Lucy said, softly letting go of her hand. I can prove it to you, hold on,” she continued and quickly ran up the stairs to her bedroom. Lucy took a steadying breath before she started rummaging through her desk drawer.
